Going Underground this adventure can be added to, or combined with most of our Vezere Valley hikes. ** This adventure is suitable for most people, but requires a high level of fitness, the ability to clamber, and are not claustrophobic.

We have spent 2 years exploring the caves, and beyond. “Going Underground” is NOT a “Potholing” adventure, but an adventure for hikers that want to experience another world underground.
These caves, chambers and tunnels have been used for 1000’s of years, and they played an extremely important role during the Second World War, where they were used by the French Resistance.

Evidence of our ancestors living in the Vezere Valley dates back to more than 460,000 years ago. Our oldest ancestors were Nomads that would follow the herds of wild animals trekking through the Valley. These ancestors would stay in caves and nomadic shelters. Later on, our ancestors started to settle in the vezere valley, and their homes became more permanent.

On the Prehistoric Dwellings of the Vezere Valley excursion, we take you on a tour of some excellent unmapped Troglodytes, caves, shelters, overhangs and nomadic dwellings. We will explain “hands on” why, when, where, what and how our ancestors survived and thrived in the Vezere Valley.

Most people visiting the Vezere and Dordogne Valley have an interest in history, so why not stay a few nights in an historic B&B in the heart of it all?. B&B Ferme de Tayac, a 12th century former farmhouse / monastery ideally situated in Les Eyzies de Tayac, in the heart of the Vezere Valley, known as the “Prehistoric Capital of the World” B&B Ferme de Tayac is a must place to stay if you are visiting the Dordogne, since it officially opened to the public 2 years ago, it has been rated the #1 B&B accommodation both years running. B&B Ferme de Tayac is a 12th Century former Monastery farmhouse, lived in and run by the Monks who owned and worked the land for hundreds of years. Located in the heart of the Vezere Valley in the picturesque small village of Tayac, just 8 minutes walk from the center of Les Eyzies. In 2001 Suzanne & Mike purchased Ferme de Tayac after it had been unoccupied for over 10 years. It was in a sorry state, and was deemed dangerous and a hazzard. It took Suzanne & Mike 7 years to bring Ferme de Tayac back to it’s former glory. With among other things, meter thick walls, rooms built into solid rock, oak beam structures, and bedrooms in former monks quarters make Ferme de Tayac a speacial and very unique place to stay whilst visiting the Dordogne, and it is not hard to see why Ferme de Tayac has been the travellers choice of accommodation for 2 years. For more and updated info on Ferme de Tayac please visit their official web site http://www.fermedetayac.com/

Both the Dordogne and Vezere are named after the rivers that cut through the area. A lot has changed over the years, 1000’s of years to be precise.
Ever since “Man” came and settled in the Vezere Valley, the sheer limestone cliffs have been ideal spots to use as shelters, safe from the dangers that our ancestors faced, wild animals, severe weather, and other tribes.
Some of Dordogne’s best kept secrets are still to be found along the rivers, and only accessible by canoe or canoe / hike.

Our canoe trips leave at the crack of dawn, chances are you will spot deer, wild boar, otters, buzzards, kingfishers, fox and plenty of other wildlife.
We will pass Chateaus, ancient farmhouses, troglodytes and caves, and this is all on the way to our exploring grounds
